Another Travel LO

It is great that I finally have some photos of my girls to scrap.  They both had traveling plans for this past February.  It was fun to look at their photos, hear their stories and then select a few photos to scrap for their albums.

This week's palette at CSI was perfect for a B&W of Diane and Eric.  I fell in love with this combination as it reminds me of that old BG line Circa 2009 "Origins".

I was lucky that I had one sheet from the line that I had picked up in the sale bin a few years back.  I totally devoured that line in the matter of a week.  Susan is still hoarding hers and offered to share but I declined because I figured it would be good to use up some of the stash.  Amazing how you can pick through and recreate the colours of a favourite past line.  Might be a future challenge in there for me.

I was happy to use up one more of those gigantic numbers from Pink Paislee.

And a few close ups!

I got the idea to place brads to represent the colours of the palette in a piece of film strip pattern washi tape, during one of my sleepless scrappy nights.  Yes I still lose sleep to my art.  Forever the tortured artist.  ;)

Here is the sketch I used by Liz Chidester.

Time to start cracking the next case.

Backyard Visitors

As Spring slowly approaches Alberta, the bird community returns.  I am thrilled that it is warm enough to leave my window opened so I can hear the birds chirping away throughout the day.  Best music ever!  Today I heard the familiar honking of the Canadian Geese.  It makes me happy.

In the past week I have been trying to capture a photograph of my newest bird couple hanging out at the bird feeder.  They are from the Finch family.... the Common Redpoll.  I had only ever seen one once in the house I lived in before so it is quite exciting to have them come daily to feed.

The female looks similar to a Sparrow except she has a red patch on her head.  The male has a beautiful red head and pinkish breast.  Eventually I will get a good photo and I have the Big Guy on the job too. ;)

Here's the back view of the male.

With this one I finally got a good view of him but I was shooting into the sun and the photo had a weird blue look to it.  I boosted up the colour and hope to scrap it as a funky LO.  But... I really want an authentic photo for my bird album.

And one last photo of shadow.  I love how the shadow is behind the actual branches of the tree.

Wishing you all a wonderful Spring day filled with the beauty of nature.  :)

No Buy Challenge ~ March Update

So it is almost the end of another month.  Time to let you all know how I am doing on my No Buy Challenge.

I have to admit that scrappy shopping has been on my mind.  I think it is knowing that the CHA stuff is slowly filtering into the LSS's.  It is this time of year that I usually go into full "stalking mode" where I am on the lookout for the new goodies.  Not this year!

A funny thing happened while Susan and I were scrapping at my place. Susan was looking for a little something something to finish off her LO.  She asked me for some of those "enamel dots."  I told her that I didn't have any.  She got this shocked look on her face.  The "Jennifer of last year" would have had a supply in every colour!  ;)  Enamel dots are new out this year and so I won't be getting any until next year. We laughed..... but I was crying on the inside.  Just joking...... maybe.  ;)

As for scrappy shopping this month,  I treated myself to some cardstock.  I was running low on kraft paper so a trip into the LSS was needed.  They were out of kraft.  :(  I thought some coloured cardstock would be exciting, but it wasn't.  ;(  I just don't use it much.  This is why card stock is on my "okay to buy" list.  It is something that I will never overbuy.  So I got in and out real fast and tried not to look at anything new, or exciting or sparkly!  {sigh} I had to wait in line at the check out right next to all of the new Crate goodies.   It was torture.  ;)

But.... I did do some scrappy shopping this month and still managed to stay with the challenge!  How you may ask?  Well, every year, Susan and I do a purge and then donate the goods to The Boys & Girls Club.  It was my turn to drop it off this year.  Here in my front entrance sat 3 bags and one pizza box filled with goodies.  Well,  I knew what I had put in the pile but, I didn't know what Susan was purging.  So..... I went a shopping!  LOL

So this is where it gets weird.  Normally I would never even bother to look through the old stuff let alone take away from the children of our community, but I couldn't help myself.  It was old stuff but I could see the creative possibilities.  Just because it was old didn't mean it wasn't good.  It was new to me.  Heck, I even found some paper that I had purged to Susan last year.  I saw a renewed value in it.

Now before you start thinking that I am some kind of scrooge, I really didn't take much and there was still lots to give to the children.  The children were not going to be sitting around the craft table with nothing but an old sheet of wrinkly newspaper and three crayons.   So I am not a scrooge, just a little desperate to get a scrappy shopping high.  ;)  I even managed to scare Susan when I sent her an email titled "I Went Scrappy Shopping!"  hee hee

Here's what I "bought" for "free99"!!

So I thought it would be fun to do a LO using some of this new found treasure.  It would be a challenge to use old stuff and try to make it seem new!  Here's what I created using the, let's call it the "Gold Kit".
That way it is more fun!  ;)

I figured that mixing new with old would give my LO an updated look.  I choose this Studio Calico paper as my background to represent new.  Some embellishments from last year's "Pickled Pears" by Kaiser Craft also helped to update the look.

I was determined to use both of those old yellow chipboard flowers.  It turned out better than I had expected.  Layer them up with other stuff and they are alright!  It has been a long time since I used a SassaFrass Lass sticker but they still rock!

I even used my old paper tearing ruler... still rocks!!

I found this unopened package of black pearls in my stash!  I was so excited!  I figure that it is the closest that I will be getting to an enamel dot for another 9 months.  ;)

Here is the sketch I used from a site that is new to me.   It is called Scrap Friends.  The sketches are so detailed that it almost feels like cheating!  I love them!!

I think that this very fresh style of sketch also helps to make old product look new!

I am still loving this challenge.  I have a whole new appreciation for my stuff and I feel that having less is helping the creative flow.  :)  I'm still feeling strong!!

3 months down ~ 9 months to go!  :)

From My Front Door....

it looks like this.

So sad.... for a spring day.   Yes, I try to embrace winter but it is springtime now and Alberta apparently never got the memo.  ;)  And why did my ancestors decide to go North?  ;)  I seriously don't know how the pioneers survived.  Can you see the sun in my photo?   (Yes, this is a morning shot with an Eastern view. )  Okay, I'll help you out.  It's that little bright patch up in the righthand corner.  LOL

Yesterday was more like your typical December day.  We had so much snow.  I was fortunate enough to get to stay inside and hide.  The snow caused havoc on the roads.  There were two serious pile ups.  One involving more than 100 vehicles.  My girls were let out of work early and I am grateful that all of my loved ones are safe.

The good news is, they are calling for spring temperatures by the end of next week.  Yay!!!  The melting will be epic.  Maybe I should be buying billy boots?

Getting Green

Lately I have been trying to up my efforts in being a little bit more green.  I go through phases where I do quite well and then I slip back into my not so green ways.  In 2009, I was making some of my own cleaners, carefully sorting all waste making sure to recycle everything possible and putting what we could in our organic pick up.  So I am back on the green tangent and hoping that I can keep myself a little more motivated this time to actually make it a way of life.  I know that we have a long way to go but I am going to consider every small effort a success!

So in an effort to keep this state of mind alive and kicking, I figured that I will do the odd "green post" here on the blog.  No worries, scrappy stuff will still be the focus.  I'll just share the odd success and some failures too I'm sure.

So this green effort was a really fun and easy one.

I love to burn votive candles and tea lights.  I usually go the cheap route and buy the paraffin wax ones at Ikea.  They don't always burn clean.  They are a petroleum product.  Sometimes if I have been burning them lots, I will notice soot on plastic surfaces such as plastic laundry baskets and garbage containers. It really makes me realize what I am putting into the air of my home.

Beeswax candles are totally organic and natural and they burn clean.  A 100% cotton wick helps too!

I ordered these from an Etsy shop owned by a couple out of Toronto, Canada.

Here's to clean candle burning!

Cracking the Case

Oh the CSI site has been a full on addiction as of late.  How did I scrap before without a palette and recipe?  Here is the newest challenge up.

I do love me a bit of vintage and this palette was perfect to scrap the recent photo I took of my journal and cartridge pen.

I was actually able to use 12 of the evidence elements on this one.  It is fun when it works out that way.

I really pulled out some old stuff for this page.  I can't remember the last time I used a shaped paper and I always loved this one from Pink Paislee.  The ballerina pink patterned paper is also old Pink Paislee.  The yellow tape measure is from an old sheet of Little Yellow Bicycle.  It feels good to use up some old stuff and have it look new by mixing it with some newer stuff.  Hey, I used ribbon!  Not sure when the last time was that I did that!

I used this sketch from PageMaps.

Well, our sun is shining today in Alberta but rumour has it that we have a pile of snow headed our way.    Yuck.  :(

Hope the grass is green and tulips are breaking ground where you are.  :)

New in the Shop

So this week Crafty Tuesday was moved up to Crafty Monday.  This happens sometimes when real life gets in the way of scrappy time.  Susan and I decided to make some new embellishments for our Etsy shop!  Here's what we made.

Susan had the idea to include a set of 20 word banners in each pack so that a person could choose the perfect sentiment to suit their project.

The left over banners would be great to use alone too.

Susan even dragged over her vintage portable typewriter to type up the sentiments in true vintage style!  The font and look of the old ink ribbon is fantastic.  We have decided that "portable" circa 1960 is not quite what portable means today.  That sucker is heavy!  LOL  It was a fun day and we laughed a lot.

It's Good to Laugh

Last night we went to see Canadian born comedian, Jeremy Hotz.  We had seen him twice before and totally enjoyed him.  We laughed just as hard this time around.  He is very interactive with his audience.  He chooses his targets within the first few minutes of the show and comes back to and includes these people in his entire act.  I was a little worried to find out that Rob had scored us tickets in the fourth row.  I would find it terrifying to be one of the targets.  Before the show I pleaded with Rob to not laugh too loud or draw any attention to us.  Phew!  We went under the radar.  LOL

We bought his DVD and lined up to get an autograph and a photo.  He also signed my ticket stub.  He was lovely to meet in person and being a crazy scrapper, I felt the need to tell him that I am planning a scrapbook page on him.  Can't wait to do the LO and include the ticket stub!

Laughing really is good for the soul.

Mint Green Baby Blanket ~ Revisited

Sometimes I start a crafty project and then at some point tire of it and put it away.  It is a slippery slope as putting it away can sometimes result in a forgotten and unfinished project.  I started knitting my first baby blanket in January of last year and blogged about it here.  Well that blanket sat at pretty much that point for quite some time.  A few weeks ago I resolved to pick it up again and actually finish it.  Last night I did just that.

It was a really fun and relaxing pattern.  I do have to admit to a few tiny mistakes along the way but all in all I am proud of the end result.

Now I am starting a new one in one of my favourite colours for babies, lavender.  I am hoping that I can perfect the pattern this time as this one is using the good wool from the fancy wool shop.  If I ever have a granddaughter, this will go to her.  And... if there is a tiny mistake along the way, I'll just consider it a Granny's #1 Imperfect.  ;)

Hope you are all enjoying a relaxing Sunday afternoon.  Lady is.  Nothing better than an afternoon nap in a sunny patch.

"Besties ~ Sort of"

I have a new CSI case to share today!

Such a fun colour palette.  As soon as I saw it I thought of Studio Calico.  I have been wanting to use the title "Besties" since hearing it so often on The Big Bang Theory.  (Just love the relationship between Penny and Amy Farah Fowler.)  It seemed perfect for documenting the "friendship" between Maggie and Lady.  They really don't care for each other that much.  They just sort of tolerate each other.  I was so happy to discover that this photo of them has a photo of Gus in the background.  I used arrows to point it out on the LO.

This week's challenge also included this fun sketch!

Hope you are all having a terrific week!

The White Sisters Big Adventure ~ Etsy

I have not been chatting much about the White Sisters and their Crafty Tuesdays for quite some time.  Oh we have been busy, very busy.  We were keeping things on the down low until we had things up and running.  Susan and I have opened up an Etsy shop!

We have been dreaming about this for quite some time and last fall decided to stop dreaming and start doing.  The shop is called Knit One Scrap Too.

Here is a small sample of some of the kinds of things we are making.

If you would like the chance to win these just pop on over to the shop and then come back and leave me a comment telling me which item you like best in the shop!   I'll choose a random winner on Friday evening.  This giveaway is opened to everyone.  :)

Make sure you head on over to Susan's blog because she has some goodies that she is giving away too!

Susan and I have lots of ideas for items we plan on making.  Crafty Tuesdays rock!  :)

This giveaway is now closed.
